History from McSkimming Memorial Trophy to the PGG Wrightson Vetmed
National Circuit

The original circuit had its beginnings back in 1972, when the McSkimming family donated a magnificent Gold and Silver Trophy, of considerable value called “The Triple Crown” in memory of the contribution by the late Fred McSkimming to competition shearing in Alexandra in particular.

The first competition began at Alexandra in 1972 (compulsory entry)
and included Waimate and Golden Shears. The “Triple Crown” related to the three events each with a different wool type. The idea of a “Triple Crown”, came from Fred McSkimming himself who firmly believed that New Zealand’s champion shearer should be the best over all types of sheep.

Originally the format saw competitors carry their qualifying points from the three competitions through to the final – this was retained until 1987 when a rule change had finalists starting on zero. The “Triple Crown”, concept evolved into five venue qualifying rounds, becoming known as the National Shearing Circuit. Alexandra – Merinos, Waimate – Long wool, Golden Shears – multi-breeds, Christchurch – Corriedales, Raglan – lambs, Pahiatua – second shear.

12 shearers qualify for the semi-final and then 6 for the final. Now into it’s 49th year, just three sponsors have been involved with the circuit; Caltex 1974-1988, D B Draught 1989-2002, and PGG
Wrightson from 2003. After a one-year break PGG Wrightson have partnered with Vetmed this year to continue their long association with the National Circuit. Prolific winners have been Sir David Fagan (9 wins), Colin King (6 wins), Tony Coster (5 wins), Darin Forde (4 wins)
