Mr Ian Dempsey supplied sheep for the contest from its inception in 1968 until his death in 1998, at which time the Shears received notification that the late Mr Dempsey had bequeathed a very generous sum to the shears, the interest from this to be paid annually and continues until this day.

In 2017 the Waimate Shears held it’s 50th contest. The book “Spring Shears, Spring Showers” was compiled to celebrate and record the 50-year history of the Shears. Copies are still available for purchase.

1969
- Name change – South Island Spring Shearing Championship Society Inc
1970
- Venue change – Waimate Stadium
- New event – Young Farmers Inter-district shearing & woolhandling event
1973
- 5 stands
1974
- Waimate was included (2nd round) of the Caltex International incorporating the McSkimming Memorial Trophy
- Waimate was included in the Marlboro shearer of the year (1 of 11 contests)
1975
- New event – Junior blades
1977
- Waimate Shears organised a display of shearing for Queen Elizabeth II visit to Timaru
1978
- Intermediate Blade event replaced the Junior Blade event
1979
- New event – Woolhandling (1 grade)
1980
- New President – Jim Gibson
1981
- Waimate was included in the Southern Circuit woolhandling (best 3 of 6 contests)
1982
- New President – Stan Henderson
1983
- Woolhandling event moved to Russell Harts woolshed, (finals at the stadium)
1985

- Because the Stadium was demolished the shears was held in the Dempsey Pavilion and marque at A & P showgrounds & all woolhandling returned to Russell Hart’s woolshed
2017
- 50th Waimate Shears held in the new A & P Shears pavilion at the Waimate A & P Showgrounds. Returned to a 2-day event, including all woolhandling at pavilion
2020
- New event & title – New Zealand Winter Comb previously held in Omarama
